This feature class resides within the BIOLOGY Feature Data Set of the Lake Erie - 2022 ESI Geodatabase. It contains vector polygons representing HABITAT data for Lake Erie. The study area includes the United States portion of Lake Erie, covering the coastal portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York from the Michigan/Ohio border to the west to the New York/Canada border to the east. This data set contains sensitive biological resource data for rare, threatened, and endangered plants, fungus, and habitats of listed animals in Ohio. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in associated data tables (described in Entity Attribute Overview below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set comprises a portion of the ESI data for Lake Erie. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The ESI data are intended to provide baseline environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources. The ESI data may be appropriate for many other coastal management efforts, though the original intent should be kept in mind. Conceptual Consistency A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute Accuracy Report, is used to verify both attribute accuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistency checks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies, and SQL SERVER(R) to ArcGIS(R) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, before the complete Geodatabase and metadata are created. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjected to several consistency checks, and processed into the final delivery format. Two main sources of data were used to depict habitat distribution and seasonality for the HABITATS data layer: 1) personal interviews with resource experts from the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP), New York Natural Heritage Program (NYNHP), and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and 2) unpublished Element Occurrence datasets. Data for rare plants were provided by NYNHP, ODNR, and PNHP. State or federal endangered or threatened and state special concern plants were mapped in the ESI, and species names were generalized according to their status. Federally listed plants were mapped as "Federally threatened plant" or "Federally threatened plant", and state listed species were mapped as "Endangered plant 1", "Endangered plant 2" , "Endangered plant 3" , "Threatened plant 1", "Threatened plant 2", or "Threatened plant 3". Special concern plants were mapped as "Special concern plant". ODNR also provided data on a state threatened fungus, which was mapped in the ESI as "Threatened fungus". Because of the need to mask names of sensitive species, ODNR provided their Element Occurrence dataset with animal species names obscured to "Vertebrate Animal" and "Invertebrate Animal", along with the records' listing statuses. The "Invertebrate Animal" records were mapped in the ESI Invertebrates layer (see "Invertebrates" section), and the "Vertebrate Animal" records were mapped in the ESI Habitats layer as "animal habitat", along with the listing status in the ESI species name. They were mapped as "animal habitat" because the masked information provided from ODNR did not allow the records to be mapped to any other ESI elements, but all these records are of conservation priority. The records from the ODNR dataset include the following records in the ESI: "Federally endangered animal habitat", "Federally threatened animal habitat", "Endangered animal habitat" (SE), "Threatened animal habitat" (ST), "Special concern animal habitat" (SC), and "Special interest animal habitat". In these records, the animal species itself has the listed status. 2022-08-01T00:00:00 ESI Program Manager orr.esi@noaa.gov processor Depending on the type of source data, three general approaches are used for compiling the data layer: 1) information gathered during initial interviews and from hardcopy sources are compiled onto U.S. Geological Survey 1:42,000 topographic quadrangles and digitized; 2) hardcopy maps are digitized at their source scale; 3) digital data layers are evaluated and used "as is" or integrated with the hardcopy data sources. See the Lineage section for additional information on the type of source data for this data layer. The ESI, biology, and human-use data are compiled into the standard ESI digital data format. A second set of interviews with participating resource experts are conducted to review the compiled data.
