The study area includes the United States portion of Lake Erie, covering the coastal portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York from the Michigan/Ohio border to the west to the New York/Canada border to the east. These data sets contain sensitive biological resource data for freshwater fish species in Lake Erie. Vector polygons in this data set represent fish distribution, concentration areas, and spawning areas. Vector points in this data set represent fish spawning areas. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in associated data tables (described in Entity Attribute Overview below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set is a portion of the ESI data for Lake Erie. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The ESI data are intended to provide baseline environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources. The ESI data may be appropriate for many other coastal management efforts, though the original intent should be kept in mind. Conceptual Consistency A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute Accuracy Report, is used to verify both attribute accuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistency checks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies, and SQL SERVER(R) to ArcGIS(R) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, before the complete Geodatabase and metadata are created. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjected to several consistency checks, and processed into the final delivery format. Three main sources of data were used to depict fish distribution and seasonality for these data layers: 1) personal interviews with resource experts from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), the Seneca Nation of Indians, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC); and 2) numerous published and unpublished reports and datasets. General distributions: Fish general distributions were mapped using expert knowledge collected during workshops. Species included were determined by the experts for Lake Erie, tributaries, and the Niagara River. For fish general distributions, Lake Erie was divided into a western portion (waters west of the Black River) and a central and eastern portion (waters east of the Black River). This division follows natural differences in the fish community and lake depth, and within each of these portions, fish were mapped according to bathymetry. Polygons were created for the following depth zones in the western basin: 0-3 m and >3 m. Polygons were created for the following depth zones in the central and eastern basin: 0-10 m, 10-20 m, and >20 m. Species assemblages and appropriate life history stages and seasonalities were mapped in each zone. General distributions of fish in the Niagara River were mapped separately upstream and downstream of Niagara Falls. Expert knowledge for mapping of fish general distributions was supplemented with information from reports and publications. Concentration areas and tributaries: Concentrations areas of various species were mapped using expert knowledge collected in workshops. Experts were asked to identify concentrations areas for any of the mapped species, and the species were mapped with a mapping qualifier of "Concentration Area" in polygons covering each of these areas. Expert knowledge for mapping of fish concentration areas was supplemented with information from reports and publications. Experts also provided species lists and life history stages present in the tributaries of Lake Erie.
