Vector polygons in this data set represent sea turtle distributions, and northern diamondback terrapin and other federally and state protected reptile and amphibian nesting areas and distributions. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in associated data tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set is a portion of the ESI data for the the NY/NJ Metro Area, Hudson River, and South Long Island region. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The ESI data are intended to provide baseline environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources. The ESI data may be appropriate for many other coastal management efforts, though the original intent should be kept in mind. Conceptual Consistency A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute Accuracy Report, is used to verify both attribute accuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistency checks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies, and SQL SERVER(R) to ArcGIS(R) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, before the final Geodatabase and metadata are created. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjected to several consistency checks, and processed into the final delivery format. Three main sources of data were used to depict herpetofauna distribution and seasonality for this data layer: 1) digital/tabular data sets provided by the New York Natural Heritage Program (NY NHP), NatureServe (NJ), and New York State Department of State (NYSDOS); 2) published and unpublished reports; and 3) expert knowledge from resource experts. Sea turtle general distributions were mapped largely based on expert knowledge and the New Jersey Threatened and Endangered Species Field Guide. Sea turtle polygons represent potential in-water presence in bays and the Atlantic Ocean. The bays, particularly along the south shore of Long Island, are seasonal foraging grounds for green, Kemp.s ridley, and loggerhead sea turtles. Sea turtles typically do not arrive in NY/NJ waters until May or June and migrate south by mid-November. Sea turtles are not known to nest in this AOI. Northern diamondback terrapin locations depicted in this atlas indicate known current nesting locations but suitable habitat is widespread in this atlas region and there is potential for terrapins to be present in most bays and estuaries in New York and New Jersey. Breeding locations included in this atlas for terrapins were obtained from survey data collected by Russel Burke, Hofstra University, Michael Farina, Marine Nature Study Area; Oceanside, NY and Robert Cook, National Park Service. Additional nesting locations and some general distribution locations were obtained from NY NHP, NatureServe (NJ), and the NY DOS Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitats narrative and associated polygon data. These locations were further refined during data review sessions with local resource experts. Other reptile and amphibian species were added to the atlas based on their conservation status, their dependence on the aquatic environment during sensitive life stages (breeding in particular), their rarity in the region, or based on expert input. At the request of data providers, some species locations were buffered and species names masked to prevent illegal collection. The bulk of the data was obtained from NY NHP, NatureServe (NJ), NY DOS Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitats narrative and associated polygon data, and from interviews with resource experts.
