It contains vector polygons representing sensitive biological resource data for reptiles and amphibians (18 species total) within the Long Island Sound study area. The study area includes Long Island Sound, tidal tributaries and bays, freshwater streams, lakes, and land areas in New York and Connecticut. Vector polygons in this data set represent reptile and amphibian species distributions, migration and nesting areas, and areas of vulnerable occurrence. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in associated data tables (described in Entity Attribute Overview below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set is a portion of the ESI data for Long Island Sound. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The ESI data are intended to provide baseline environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources. The ESI data may be appropriate for many other coastal management efforts, though the original intent should be kept in mind. This process includes multiple automated logical consistency checks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies, and SQL SERVER(R) to ArcGIS(R) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, before the final Geodatabase and metadata are created. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjected to several consistency checks, and processed into the final delivery format. Selection of species: Eighteen species of reptiles and amphibians are represented in this atlas. This is not intended to include all species present within the study area. Species were selected based on conservation interest (i.e. endangered, threatened, or special concern), or ecological importance. Reptile species include marine turtles, freshwater and terrestrial turtles, and snake species of special concern. Amphibian species include frog, toad, and salamander species of special concern. Data sources include digital GIS data, published studies, and expert knowledge. A total of 309 polygons were created to represent the distributions of the 18 selected reptile and amphibian species within the Long Island Sound study area. Juvenile loggerhead, Kemp\x92s ridley, and green sea turtles regularly migrate to the waters of Long Island Sound for foraging during the warmer months from late June through late fall. Leatherback sea turtles only make use of the far eastern end of the Long Island Sound atlas area (east of Fishers Island). Sea turtles are not known to nest in any of the Long Island Sound area. Terrestrial turtles that are state species of special concern that were mapped for this atlas include the diamondback terrapin, spotted turtle, Eastern box turtle, and wood turtle. In addition, the Eastern mud turtle is a state endangered species in New York. The diamondback terrapin has also been identified as a species of greatest conservation need in the Northeast United States. The Eastern hog-nosed snake is a state species of concern in both New York and Connecticut.
