This data set is a compilation of faults mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and published in USGS bulletin series 1028 (1956-1971). These bulletins are the last published attempt at mapping structure and stratigraphy of the Aleutians on an island-by-island basis. Only faults that manifest themselves on land were included in the USGS reports. Faults were transcribed from these bulletins onto the ESI maps. On the ESI maps, the faults are portrayed as linear features, with no map indication of their type (normal vs. thrust).This data set comprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA). These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The fault data were collected, mapped, and digitized as part of a general assessment of the geophysical hazards present on the Aleutians and the Alaskan Peninsula. The process includes a standardized data entry methodology, hardcopy data review by in-house and external resource experts, a final Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) process, and multiple automated logical consistency checks. Quantitative data (such as densities, counts, abundances, or concentrations) provided by resource experts for inclusion in the data set may vary widely in attribute accuracy, depending upon the methodology used to collect and compile such data. Horizontal Positional Accuracy The positional accuracy of the faults portrayed on the maps is difficult to estimate, except to state that they are compiled on hardcopy basemaps at a scale of 1:250,000 and 1:63,360 (in the case of Unalaska). The scales at which the faults were originally mapped in the USGS reports varied from 1:25,000 to 1:250,000. For the most part, the USGS reports are the result of field reconnaissance mapping techniques, and the fault data included on the ESI maps reflect the positional accuracy of these original data. See the Lineage and Process_Description sections for more information on the original data source and how these data were integrated or manipulated to create the final data set. Completeness Report These data represent a synthesis of expert knowledge and available hardcopy reports on mapped faults in the Aleutian chain. Faults presented in U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports as "speculative" (dotted lines with question marks) were not included. Conceptual Consistency A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute_Accuracy_Report, is used to verify both attribute accuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistency checks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies (such as dangles, unnecessary node, etc.), and ORACLE(r) to ARC/INFO(r) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, where the data are written to CD-ROM and the metadata are written. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjected to a number of quality and consistency checks. The main sources of data used to depict fault distribution were U. S. Geological Survey Bulletins 1028A-U (1956-1971). This bulletin series was cited by local experts during initial project interviews. Information pertaining to fault location was taken from hardcopy maps and reports and compiled by hand onto U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000 and 1:63,360 (in the case of Unalaska) topographic quadrangles.
