A full set of S-111 tiles is created for each new model run cycle, which occurs four times per day for all models except for RTOFS, which updates only once per day. Files are organized using a path naming convention that includes the OFS identifier (e.g. 'cbofs' corresponding with output from the Chesapeake Bay Operational Forecast System) as well as the year, month, day, and hour corresponding with each model run initialization time. Each individual S-111 (HDF-5) file contains all forecast projections from a single model run for that geographic area. In other words, a single S-111 file will contain multiple gridded arrays each containing a forecast valid at a distinct time in the future, out to the forecast horizon of the underlying modeling system. All surface currents forecasts in this collection are computed at a depth of 4.5 meters below water surface, or half the water column depth, whichever is shallower. The international standard for surface current forecasts is S-111. This standard is designed to make surface currents compatible with Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) systems. Accuracy Accuracy is determined by running comparisons of the model against observations, and quantifying the precision (e.g. unbiased RMSE) and bias of the model. Horizontal Positional Accuracy Quantified by comparing the model mesh grid to the real world spatial reference system (e.g. WGS84). Vertical Positional Accuracy Quantified by comparing the bathymetry/topography underlying the model with observed raw surveys of bathymetry/topography and quantifying the total propagated uncertainty (TPU) during transformation from the raw survey's vertical datum to the vertical datum used by the model. Bias Bias is determined by running comparisons of the model against observations, and quantifying the bias of the model. Bias corrections are conducted in pre-processing for STOFS-3D-Atlantic and STOFS 3D Pacific. Comparability Both model and observation data are converted into the LMSL datum using NOAA's VDatum tool for direct comparison. The mesh bathymetry near the coast is converted to LMSL using the VDatum software to standardize the vertical datum. A combination of different Digital Elevation Model (DEM) sources is used for mesh generation and bathymetry. Precision Precision is determined by running comparisons of the model against observations, and quantifying the precision (e.g. unbiased RMSE) of the model.
