STOFS-2D-Global runs four times daily producing numerical storm surge and tide model forecast guidance globally out to 180 hours. The model is forced by real time output of winds and pressure from the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS). The domain of the operational STOFS-2D-Global forecast guidance covers the entire globe, including the floodplain of the coastal U.S., the Caribbean area surrounding Puerto Rico, and Alaska. STOFS-2D-Global is the NOAA source for International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) S-104 water level forecast guidance for marine navigation. STOFS provides operational nowcast and forecast guidance for water level, water currents, water temperature, and salinity. This guidance supports a wide range of user communities, including disaster mitigation, marine navigation, emergency response, search and rescue, ecosystem health, and pollution transport. The files are in NETCDF, GRIB2, and SHEF format. download dataset Representativeness Uncertainty quantification of the model's representativeness of the frequency distribution in the population of interest is part of future work, by using ensembles, which are multiple iterations of the model simulation to determine the distribution for each variable. Accuracy The model's water level is assessed for its accuracy, stability, and robustness through a three-year hindcast simulation as well as ongoing skill assessment in real-time for all model forecast cycles. Horizontal Positional Accuracy Quantified by comparing the model mesh grid to the real world spatial reference system (e.g. WGS84). Vertical Positional Accuracy Quantified by comparing the bathymetry/topography underlying the model with observed raw surveys of bathymetry/topography and quantifying the total propagated uncertainty (TPU) during transformation from the raw survey's vertical datum to the vertical datum used by the model. Bias Bias is determined by running comparisons of the model against observations, and quantifying the bias of the model. Bias is calculated at station locations by subtracting the combined forecast guidance of storm surge and tide from the observed water level. A post-processing bias correction method is also implemented at station locations where NOS/CO-OPS observations are available, which involves averaging the bias over the most recent five days of nowcasts and observations to adjust future forecast guidance. The average bias recorded during the evaluation period was -0.01 m. Bias corrections are conducted in post-processing for STOFS-2D-Global. Comparability Both model and observation data are converted into the LMSL datum using NOAA's VDatum tool for direct comparison. The mesh bathymetry near the coast is converted to LMSL using the VDatum software to standardize the vertical datum. A combination of different Digital Elevation Model (DEM) sources is used for mesh generation and bathymetry. Precision Precision is determined by running comparisons of the model against observations, and quantifying the precision (e.g. unbiased RMSE) of the model. The RMSE and the bias fluctuates depending on the cycle due to significant meteorological events, such as storms; nonetheless, the average RMSE recorded during the evaluation period is 0.082 m.
