This project aimed to collect and delineate approximately 930 square miles of intertidal and subtidal lands. Habitat delineation extended from the upper intertidal zone to the point where bottom image signatures were no longer visible due to depth or turbidity, approximately minus-2 meters in the San Francisco Bay system. A single benthic habitat dataset was used to extract three data layers: biotic, substrate, and geoform. While polygon boundaries remained unchanged during extraction, any polygons lacking biotic, substrate, or geoform information were removed from their respective layers. These data are designed to assist local coastal zone managers in their decision-making processes and the long-term management of the Bay, including applications such as sea level rise. The layers available within the data download include: biotic, geoform, and substrate. This data features a 0.3-meter spatial resolution, an 8-bit dynamic range, and encompasses four spectral bands (Blue, Green, Red, Near-infrared). The spatial accuracy of the imagery is +/- 2 meters at the CE 90 confidence level. Despite variations in tidal levels across flight lines, all data collection occurred within +/- 1 hour of mean low water. Attribute accuracy was assessed through visual comparison of aerial photographs to ensure consistency with the classification system and photo signatures. Groundtruthing further aided in the delineation and classification of photo signatures. A traditional thematic accuracy assessment was not feasible due to the significant time gap between imagery collection (2011) and mapping (2013). Instead, field information from 2013 was used to compare mapped features with observed conditions. NOAA conducted a separate field validation in November 2014. Between 2013 and 2014, the contractor recorded 571 field observations, and NOAA recorded over 118. A field verification report detailed the methods for obtaining these observations, information about the landscape, and point distributions. Unlike the Biotic and Substrate layers, no validation was performed on the Geoform layer as this was ancillary to the original project objectives and requirements. Horizontal Positional Accuracy The spatial accuracy of the georeferenced imagery is 2 meters or better at the 95% confidence level as computed in accordance with the FGDC National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA). Completeness Report Polygon topology is present. All polygons were tested for closure, and no dangles, slivers, or superfluous pseudo nodes were found. Each polygon is clearly labeled, with no multiple labels within a single polygon or contiguous polygons sharing the same label. For this project a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 100 square meters (10 meters by 10 meters) was applied. The identification and ranking of co-occurring elements was made based on the percent of spatial coverage within the polygon or MMU. Conceptual Consistency These data are logically consistent From August 26 to November 29, 2010, and again on August 23, 2011, Fugro conducted 296 flight lines across 37 lifts. The 2011 flight aimed to minimize building lean. Flights were carried out at an average altitude of 9,490 feet above mean terrain, utilizing Leica ADS40-SH52 digital airborne sensors with serial numbers SH024, SH110, and SH022. A subset of this broader mission's imagery was subsequently used to generate shallow benthic habitat data. Although the imagery was tidally controlled, its acquisition did not prioritize water clarity, sun angle, or sea state -- factors typically considered crucial for shallow benthic mapping. Nevertheless, evaluations by NOAA, OPC, and Dewberry confirmed the imagery's suitability for this application in most areas. 2010-01-01T00:00:00 The Biotic feature layer was converted to Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) 2012 format. This was accomplished by reviewing the biotic attributes in the original single benthic habitat dataset and assigning a CMECS Biotic attribute to those polygons. The original source imagery was visually interpreted to determine a geoform attribute where possible. No new delineations were made as part of this process. The original polygon boundaries were delineated based on visible biota and surface sediment signatures and not on geomorphological features, therefore these boundaries may not directly correspond to the extent of geoform features in this layer.
