This joint pilot project between NOAA's Office for Coastal Management and the National Park Service applies the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) in the Great Lakes region and, specifically, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The project primarily focuses on mapping lakeshore substrates to assess their value as fisheries habitat. Additionally, the mapping effort aims to determine the distribution and extent of the widespread nuisance filamentous algae, Cladophora sp., found in the area. The workflow combined photo interpretation, object-based image analysis, field verification, and expert manual interpretation. These data include CMECS substrate and biotic components, classified to at least the subclass level. Co-occurring elements and modifiers (e.g., percent cover, induration, surface pattern) were also included for both components. Example images and corresponding CMECS classifications are available in the project report. These data also include GPS navigation tracks for each field site, video clips for many sites, and field validation points conducted over two days in August 2017 to ensure the accuracy of the map products. Source data for the mapping included underwater photography, aerial imagery, acoustic backscatter (side-scan and multibeam sonar), and high-resolution lidar data collected around the island in 2016. Underwater videography from 2008 to 2013 (U.S. Geological Survey) and 2010 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Aquatic Resource Surveys) guided the analysis of remotely sensed data and served as a quality control dataset for habitat mapping. Additionally, field observations made in August 2017 were used to compare map features with actual conditions. DEA and NOAA observed 41 points in the field, with underwater video collected at most of these sites. Side-scan sonar imagery was also collected along two transects south of the island for comparison with historical data. The instantaneous observation area for each video varied depending on altitude above the lakebed, attitude of the camera and water conditions. It was common for this do change during a single transect. Lengths of transects varied depending on the complexity of the bottom and habitats in the area. Horizontal Positional Accuracy Compiled to meet 10 meters horizontal accuracy at 95% confidence level. Topo-bathy LIDAR collected by NOAA's Office for Coastal Management in 2016 was the reference data set for the benthic mapping. These data have reported horizontal accuracy of +/- 1 meter RMSE. No independent spatial accuracy test was performed on any of the other source data sets. Navigation and position reporting for point drops and transects utilized a Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) GPS. This GPS typically provides data with an accuracy of less than 10 meters from the actual position. Completeness Report Polygon topology is present. All polygons were tested for closure, and no dangles, slivers, or superfluous pseudo nodes were found. Each polygon is clearly labeled, with no multiple labels within a single polygon or contiguous polygons sharing the same label. For this project a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 100 square meters (10 meters by 10 meters) was applied. The identification and ranking of co-occurring elements was made based on the percent of spatial coverage within the polygon or MMU. The primary project area was waters surrounding South Manitou Island Michigan from the shore to the maximum extent of the source data, an estimated area of approximately 20 square miles. Conceptual Consistency These data are logically consistent The CMECS biotic and substrate layers for South Manitou were developed using a multi-stage approach. Initially, a preliminary benthic map was created using Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) techniques, including image segmentation and classification. This map was then refined through field observations and visual interpretation to produce the final product. 2017-01-01T00:00:00 Field point selection for this study was primarily based on existing draft benthic habitat maps. Individual point files were consolidated into a single master dataset, which was provided to staff prior to field operations. GPS navigation was used to reach each designated point in the field. At each site, either a J.W. Fishers TOV-1 towed underwater video camera or a GoPro Hero 4 camera was deployed to the seabed, providing a real-time feed to the boat. Depending on the site, either a stationary point-drop or a drift transect was conducted. Drift transects were employed to examine multiple habitats and understand the transitions between signatures observed in the source data. Substrate, biota, and bottom character notes were captured as attributes within the field point dataset using ArcMap 10.5. GoPro video, recorded to an internal SD card, is available for some points. These videos were edited to remove footage from descent and ascent through the water column. A GPS point record of the transect (breadcrumb trail) was captured in Arc to document the video's path. Occasionally, new points were observed based on findings elsewhere in the area. On August 9th, side-scan sonar backscatter imagery was collected along a track southeast of the island. This data was gathered for comparison with existing data used for mapping purposes.
