The census occurs in the last days of December, on a day when conditions and visibility are favorable. Cape Shirreff is located on Livingston Island, in the South Shetlands off the Antarctic Peninsula. Monitoring pup count data allows researchers to monitor the condition of the local fur seal populations at the Cape Shirreff research site. The US AMLR Program uses these data as part of a larger ecosystem study in the antarctic peninsula region.
