Given the level of fiscal and human resources available to conduct the research, and the extensive geographic area to be covered by the effort, it clearly was not possible to consult with an exhaustive sample of shoreline users. Rather, the research effort was designed to allow for documentation of the range of relevant knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions held by persons who currently live near or frequently visit the two shoreline study sites. After the data were collected through in-person survey administration, data were entered into an Excel database. Then the entered data were checked and cleaned.
