The dataset includes 10 variable cost items commonly associated with longline trips (not including labor costs). The cost items collected are: unit price, quantity used, and total cost estimates for diesel fuel, engine oil, bait, ice; and total cost estimates for gear, provisions, and communications. Additional information about the operator and crew are also included. These data are collected on a routine basis through a collaboration between the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Economics Program and Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIRO) Observer Program. The objective of this data collection is to obtain baseline economic information on and monitor changes in key economic indicators in the American Samoa longline fishery. Completeness Report Observers accompanied fewer than 10% of American Samoa-based longline fishing trips during the period 2006-2009, but observer coverage increased to 25% in 2010. The economic data collected through this program has been limited due in part to relatively low observer coverage of the American Samoa longline fleet. After the data were collected through in-person interview, data were entered into the data entry file in Access database. Then the entered data were cleaned with logic checking, skipping patterns, and outliers.
