The goal of the study was to examine the proportions of 18:3n-3 and 18:2n-6 in the muscle and liver of two species of juvenile gadids. The level of FAs in fish fed two different gel food diets was measured in relation to species and culture temperature during an 8-week feeding trial. Diets were identical, except that one was enriched with marine oil while the other was enriched with terrestrial plant oil. Over the 8-week study the researchers examined the degree to which tissue proportions of C18PUFAs were: 1) species-specific, 2) mediated by culture temperature, 3) specific to tissue type and 4) vary temporally between tissue types. A further objective of the study was to provide the first calibration coefficients for low fat juvenile marine fish. These coefficients for both liver and muscle tissues could be used to develop quantitative approaches to diet determination in cold-water marine fish. Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology 448: 188-196 Completeness Report Only partial raw and summarized fatty acid data are provided as the study was conducted as a joint partnership with Oregon State University (OSU) under mixed internal (HEPR-EFH) and external funds awarded to both OSU and NOAA prior to the Public Access to Research Results (PARR) requirements from NOAA. Conceptual Consistency Not applicable Juvenile walleye pollock were collected from Port Townsend Bay, Washington, and juvenile Pacific cod were collected in Kodiak, Alaska. Fish were shipped to the National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, for use in an 8-week feeding trial, in which fish were fed gelatin diets modified with the addition of either marine oil or terrestrial plant oil. Three fish of each species were sampled for lipid analyses prior to the introduction of diet treatments. 24 experimental tanks were stocked with either 12 pollock per tank or 10 cod. 12 of the tanks were lowered to 3C, while the other tanks remained at 9C. The 24 tanks consisted of 3 tanks for each species at each temperature replicated for two different dietary treatments.
