A goal of the study that produced this dataset was to describe thermal reaction norms for growth of juvenile Pacific cod from three naturally produced annual cohorts from 2006-2008, a period which included a marked variation in thermal conditions in the Gulf of Alaska during the spawning and early developmental period of Pacific cod: the winter and spring of 2007 were the coldest on record since the mid-1970s. An additional goal was to describe variation among these cohorts in mean vertebral count (a trait known to vary inversely with incubation temperature in numerous fishes). The study that produced this dataset was supported in part by a grant from the North Pacific Research Board (#R0605 to Benjamin Laurel et al.). Marine Biology. 159: 2173-2183 Completeness Report Not applicable Conceptual Consistency Not applicable Two sets of temperature records were used to illustrate interannual variation in water temperatures: Nearshore temperatures in the vicinity of the fish collection site were obtained from a logging station at 10.7 m depth in Trident Basin on the northeast coast of Kodiak Island, and offshore sea surface temperatures measured at 1 m below the surface were obtained from NOAA's National Ocean Buoy Data Center for station 46078 at Albatross Banks, 65 NM south of Kodiak Island. Age-0 Pacific cod were captured from a Kodiak Island juvenile nursery in August 2006, August 2007, and July 2008, and shipped to the Alaska Fisheries Science Center Laboratory in Newport, Oregon, for use in growth rate experiments: Three groups of fish were assigned to each temperature treatment, and growth rates were estimated by weighing and measuring all fish in the experiments three times at 10-21-day intervals depending on fish size and water temperature. Age-0 Pacific cod used for vertebral counts were captured from two Kodiak Island nearshore nurseries in July and August 2006, 2007, and 2008. Fish were frozen then thawed and preserved in 95% ethanol for X-ray analysis.
