Brown is the flagship of the NOAA fleet. Named in memory of a former the U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary who perished in a plane crash in 1996, the ship is a state-of-the-art oceanographic and atmospheric research platform. The Ron Brown, as it is commonly and fondly known, is equipped with an array of advanced instruments and sensors. The system, originally used for high accuracy (Seabeam Classic) charting of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), is capable of hydrographic charting and seafloor acoustic backscatter imaging in water depths of 50 to 11,000 meters with up to 151 beams. Swath coverage (75 percent of water depth) varies as a function of depth, from 150 degrees at 1,000 meters, to 120 degrees at 5,000 meters, and 90 degrees at 11,000 meters, with a resolution of two degrees. The system regularly operates in 4000+ meters of water but is effective in shallower applications (less than 500m). Innovator ROV 2018-06 creation Innovator ROV The Innovator is a 3,000m (10,000ft) rated ocean exploration Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) built by Sonsub Inc. This vehicle is a heavy working class ROV that weighs approximately 8,000lbs (4 tons) and takes a six-member crew to operate. A three-person team operates the ROV (with two teams working 24 hours a day, in 12-hr shifts). One person serves as the pilot, who is in control of the ROV, and another serves as the co-pilot, who oversees underwater operations and controls the two manipulator arms. A third person stays outside of the van to make sure that the support equipment is functioning properly. The Innovator is equipped with a 3 chip color camera, HD still camera, suction sampler, clam shell grab, and a large 3' portable collection basket. The ROV worked in areas like the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Ocean from multiple vessels including the NOAA Ship Ronald Brown.
