The homeport of this globally ranging vessel is Kaliningrad. The Keldysh was launched in 1981. Since then, it has supported many scientific and exploratory voyages. The Keldysh measures 122 m in length and 17.8 m of beam (width). It displaces 6,240 tons of water. Normal cruising speed for the vessel is 10.5 knots, with a maximum speed of 12.5 knots. The ship has a cruising range of 20,000 nautical miles and is propelled by four 1,460-hp diesel engines. It is equipped with sophisticated satellite navigation and communication equipment. To support submersibles and instrumentation, the ship has 15 winches, 4 cranes and an A-Frame. MIR I HOV 2018-07 creation MIR I HOV The Mir I is a battery-powered, three-person submersible with a maximum operating depth of 6,000 m (20,000 ft). This deep-diving capability ranks the Mir vehicles among the deepest diving submersibles ever built, and gives them the capability to reach approximately 98% of the ocean floor. The Mirs allow scientists to observe the deep sea through multiple view ports, video records, instrument placement, sample collecting, and environmental monitoring. The submersibles are launched and recovered with a specialized crane from the starboard side of their primary support vessel, the Research Vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. To observe the ocean, the crew can peer out of a huge viewing port. While looking out the window is great, the primary data that come from submersible dives are videos. Six 5,000-watt lights allow for excellent filmmaking. Scientists are not the only ones to employ the Mirs in underwater filming. Director James Cameron used them to make his blockbuster Titanic, and they have also been used for IMAX films.
