The 175-foot ship engaged in measurements of chemical, meteorological, and biological sampling for several large scale programs within NOAA. The majority of the McArthur work was done in several of the National Marine Sanctuaries on the west coast of the United States. The vessel was operated by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations (NMAO), and was home ported at NOAA's Marine Operations Center, Pacific (MOP), in Seattle, Washington. The ship was named after William Pope McArthur and she was succeeded by the NOAA Ship McArthur II. The McArthur carried a complement of 6 officers, 17 crew members and up to 13 scientists. The scientists who carried out research aboard the McArthur came from many divisions of NOAA, as well as other Federal and state government agencies, and academia. The ship supported a wide range of studies, from the Sustainable Seas Expedition, to marine mammal surveys in the Eastern Pacific called: CHase Encirclement Stress Studies (CHESS) and Oregon, California, Washington (ORCAWHALE) project in support of protected species research efforts. The NOAA Ship McArthur was decommissioned on May 20, 2003, and is no longer in service. DeepWorker 2000 (600m Depth-Rated) Human Occupied Vehicle (HOV) 2018-05 creation DeepWorker 2000 600m DeepWorker 2000, or "DW", is a 600m (2,000ft) rated ocean exploration human occupied vehicle (HOV) built by Nuytco Research. Operating from multiple platforms, including NOAA Ships Gordon Gunter and R/V McArthur, DW is a completely self-contained, lightweight, directly operated submersible. A 30-in-wide acrylic dome serves as the entry hatch and provides the single pilot with a fantastic 250-270-degree field of vision. DW's two horizontal and two angled vertical thrusters, controlled by foot pedals, allow for extreme maneuverability at a speed of 3 knots in any direction. Its communications systems include VHF multi-channel radio for surface communications, and an acoustic through-water telephone for subsurface communications. Additional equipment includes sonar, HD cameras, a manipulator arm, tracking beacon, a precision laser measuring system, scanning sonar, and scientific sampling equipment. All equipment from onboard computers to air supply tanks have been miniaturized, allowing explorers to go deeper, and spend more time below the surface than they can with traditional scuba equipment, greatly enhancing exploration and research opportunities.
