The bulletins are identified in two series, one lettered A-Z and the other numbered 1-44. Bulletins in the lettered set are generally larger (both in format and number of pages) and focus on weather phenomena on a regional or larger scale. Those in the numbered set are smaller (approx 5in. x 7in.) and include more focused topics, general meteorological practice and scholarly studies of various meteorological phenomena. Both sets of bulletins were published between 1892 and 1913. Five additional editions of Bulletin No. 42 were published, with the final edition coming in 1939. Bulletins are not to be confused with Weather Bureau Circulars, which were published as guidance for weather observers. In the late 1990s, NCDC realized the need to host digital images of weather and climate records on the internet. As a result, NERMS was developed as a key system for providing access to the millions of original source data images in the NCDC archives. With its upload and index capability, NERMS also enables the continuation of NCDC's commitment to make more of its weather and climate data available online so that users across the world can view climate and weather records held in the NCDC archives.
