The instrument uses radar to measure backscatter to determine wind speed and direction over the surface of the ocean. ASCAT Level-2 Ultra High Resolution (UHR) storm wind retrieval measurements are generated by NOAA with ASCAT L1B data from the European Organization for Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). UHR storm wind retrievals are created using the standard KNMI wind retrieval algorithm which is applied at each pixel to estimate the wind speed and direction. The UHR winds are noisier than conventional 25 km winds, but have higher spatial resolution, estimated at 10 km. The data are produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and are distributed by the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) in the netCDF-4 file format with attributes included.
