HISA inputs include: temperature and moisture retrievals produced by the NOAA Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS); storm track from the U.S. TC operational forecast centers [National Hurricane Center (NHC)]; Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC); Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC); ATCF a-deck data; and boundary conditions from the GFS model. For each satellite pass over a TC, HISA provides estimates of maximum sustained surface wind (Vmax), minimum sea level pressure (MSLP), critical wind radii, including radii of 34-kt, 50-kt, and 64-kt winds, gradient winds fields, and balanced wind and heights fields at standard pressure levels. The output includes 5 types of files: NetCDF RZA file, NetCDF XYA file, and three ascii files, HISA_AFX, HISA_FIX, and HISA_STA. The HISA_FIX file is the primary HISA output used by the operational forecast centers, and includes HISA fixes (i.e. estimates for Vmax, MSLP, and 34-, 50, and 64-kt wind radii) in the ATCF format. The HISA_AFX provides information similar to HISA_FIX in a human-readable format. The HISA_STA provides information about predictors used to generate HISA estimates. The HISA_RZA provides radial-height cross-sections of azimuthally-averaged temperature and gradient winds, and the HISA_XYA provides 2-D balanced winds and heights on standard pressure levels. Storms are tracked in six tropical cyclone basins, with 12x12 deg lat/lon domain centered on each active TC. The number of HISA estimates produced per year depends on the number of tracked storms and their duration. Storm identifiers include the location of the basin where the storm forms. If a storm travels into a different basin it maintains the original identifier. Data files are generated at each synoptic time (00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC), and 4 hours after each synoptic time during the lifetime of a storm event. The balanced winds are generated with a horizontal grid spacing of 0.2 deg. HISA is used by TC forecasters (along with other satellite, observations, and modeling data) to determine the current storm parameters. HISA was developed by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University (CIRA/CSU) and NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Application and Research (STAR) and is produced operationally at the NOAA/NESDIS Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO). The data is distributed by the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) in the NetCDF-4 and ASCII file formats.
