The Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR) was flown aboard NOAA Synchronous Meteorological Satellite (SMS-1 and SMS-2) and GOES-1 through GOES-3 from 1974 to 1989. VISSR was modified to become the VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) flown aboard GOES-4 through GOES-7 from 1981 to 1996. The MODE A/AA/AAA format were originally stored on Sony U-matic tapes. The process for reading data from these tapes was not stable and resulted in several issues, such as incomplete files, multiple files and corrupted files. The University of Wisconsin developed 'smart' decoders that detected errors in sync patterns (the binary data used to signal start of each scan from the satellite to the ground station). This resulted in restoring missing data to complete full disk images. Also, noisy images were re-rendered to produce noise-free images. The real-time transmission of GOES VISSR and/or VAS data were received at the NESDIS Command and Data Acquisition Facility (CDA) station directly from the satellites, and processed by theSynchronous Data Buffer (SDB). The SDB reformats the data, determines the start of each line, performs a calibration of the IR data, brightness-enhances the visible data, adds grid and orbit/attitude information and retransmits the data back to a transponder on the GOES satellite for broadcast to various user stations. In reformatting the data, the SDB does an equal time to equal angle resampling to compensate for variations in the satellite spin rate. Therefore, the result is a constant number of data values per scan line corresponding to the nominal 100 rpm spin rate. The broadcast data rate is chosen such that the retransmission just occupies the time interval between real-time data bursts; i.e., the retransmission is accomplished while the instrument mirror on the satellite is viewing space between scans of the Earth (333 degrees of each spin is space view). The reduced bandwidth broadcast datastream is called the "stretched data". The format for the stretched data has changed 3 times during the archive period, and these formats are referred to as Mode A, AA, or AAA. The VAS data stream was routed to a VAS Image Processor (VIP) within the CDA station. The VIP reformatted, conducted quality checks, calibrated, and added navigational parameters to the data and then retransmitted it to the GOES satellites at 1.75 Mpbs, which in turn broadcasted the SVAS data to receiving stations at theUniversity of Wisconsin. The spatial and temporal information is provided by the VISSR Image Registration and Gridding System (VIRGS) computing facility at NOAA and inserted into the stretched VAS format by the VIP. NOAA National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service processor University of Wisconsin–Madison Space Science and Engineering Center processor NOAA's key downlink site for archive purposes was the University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) in Madison, Wisconsin. SSEC has been recording and storing GOES data since 1978. Throughout the entire history of PRE_GVAR data archive, the data were recorded on Sony U-Matic cassettes. Around 2001, NCDC funded the "GOES Data Rescue Project". SSEC began transferring the data from the aging U-matic cassettes onto IBM 3590. During the rescue project, which lasted over 2 years, some of the data was transferred to NCDC's Hierarchical Data Storage System via FTP. The remainder of the rescued data was shipped on tapes. The transfer of the entire GOES database to NCDC was completed in late 2005. In 2022 an effort was taken to reprocess the SMS 1-2 and GOES1-7 data to address ingest errors during the original read and processing from U-matic tape in the early 2000s. In addition to the ingest errors of the original data, there also existed multiple versions of the same image when a U-matic tape was read multiple times. During the reprocessing multiple occurrences of the same images were merged into a single best image. The following changes described did not make changes to the data from what would have been originally broadcast, but rather, it corrected errors due to ingest problems of the original data. The following processing was done to the data: Process 1: Lines were deleted or added when the original ingest misidentified what a line is. Often but not exclusively caused by multiple/bad sync or ground station send errors, sometimes resulting in multiple images in one index. Process 2: Bit slip errors were identified and corrected. This occurred when bits were inserted between sync and type blocks and/or data, probably from when U-matic was first recorded, or may have happened during playback. Process 3: Line misidentified as vis or IR was fixed. These errors cause partial lines or identified IR (0) or VIS (1-8) incorrectly, sometimes due to bit slip or multiple/bad sync. Process 4: Fixed line number/Line number was changed, caused by bit error. Process 5: Framing Error fixed when an IR data block size was incorrect. Unlike the processing mentioned already, the following processing described below did add information to the data files that did not exist in the broadcasted data, or were degraded due to noise which rendered them insufficient for georeferencing/navigating the image. Process 1: In cases where image data did not have or had partial insufficient orbit and attitude (O&A) information which caused software to not be able to georeference/navigate an image, O&A was added. In most of those situations, O&A from archived system navigation (SYSNAV) files that were created when the data was originally received via direct broadcast, was transplanted into the image file. Process 2: In cases where O&A was not available in the image data nor the SYSNAV file, O&A was calculated using Two-Line Elements (TLE) and running an auto navigation process.
