Acoustic data was collected using High-frequency Acoustic Recording Packages (HARPs) deployed at fixed oceanographic monitoring sites offshore Southern California. The project aims to characterize underwater soundscapes and examine temporal variability in natural and anthropogenic sound sources in the marine environment. HARPs continuously record underwater sound across a broad frequency range, providing long-term observations of ocean sound levels and acoustic events such as marine mammal vocalizations, vessel noise, and other environmental and anthropogenic sounds. Following recovery of the instruments, recorded data were decrypted, decompressed, and converted to lossless FLAC format for archival and public distribution through the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). This study was funded by the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Office of Naval Research, Chief of Naval Operations, Energy and Environmental Readiness Division (CNO N45), U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS), National Science Foundation (NSF) California Current Ecosystem Long-term Ecological Research (CCE-LTER), National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF), and the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF). Support for archiving of 2004-2010 recordings was provided by the U.S. Navy's Living Marine Resources program.
