Acoustic data was collected using High-frequency Acoustic Recording Packages (HARPs) deployed at fixed oceanographic monitoring sites offshore of Northern Alaska, in the Beaufort Sea region. The project aimed to characterize underwater soundscapes and examine temporal variability in natural (biological and physical) and anthropogenic sound sources in the marine environment. HARPs continuously record underwater sound across a broad frequency range, providing long-term observations of ocean sound levels and acoustic events such as marine mammal vocalizations, vessel noise, and other environmental and anthropogenic sounds. Following recovery of the instruments, recorded data were decompressed and converted to lossless FLAC format for archival and public distribution through the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). These datasets have been archived as part of an effort to preserve historical recordings, with support from the U.S. NAVY’S Living Marine Resources program. The project aimed to characterize underwater soundscapes and examine temporal variability in natural (biological and physical) and anthropogenic sound sources in the marine environment. Data collection was funded by the North Pacific Research Board.
