These integrated bathymetric-topographic DEMs are used to support tsunami forecasting and warning efforts at the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The DEMs are part of the tsunami forecast system SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis) currently being developed by PMEL for the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers, and are used in the MOST (Method of Splitting Tsunami) model developed by PMEL to simulate tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation. Bathymetric, topographic, and shoreline data used in DEM compilation are obtained from various sources, including NGDC, the U.S. National Ocean Service (NOS), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other federal, state, and local government agencies, academic institutions, and private companies. DEMs are referenced to the vertical tidal datum of Mean High Water (MHW) and horizontal datum of World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). Gridding interpolation to determine values between sparse NOS hydrographic soundings in deep water degrades the vertical accuracy of deep-water elevations. NGDC made every effort to obtain all available digital topographic and bathymetric datasets in the region for use in building the DEM. Datasets were visually compared internally and externally (with other overlapping datasets and satellite images and maps) in ESRI ArcGIS for identification of anomalous elevations or data inconsistencies. Where elevation inconsistencies occurred, the most recent and/or highest resolution data set was selected for use in that region. Elevations in the older and/or lower-resolution datasets were deleted prior to building the DEM. All datasets obtained by NGDC were converted to common horizontal datums of WGS 84 geographic, respectively, using FME. Grids were created using the difference values from tide stations from the Virgin Islands Region and the Inverse Distance Weighting tool in ArcMap. The resulting Arc ASCII grids were imported into ArcGIS. 2010-07-20T00:00:00 xyz files of the bathymetric data were surfaced using ESRI's ArcGIS onto a 3 arc-second grid that was then converted to an xyz file. 2010-08-05T00:00:00 xyz files for each input dataset were gridded using MB-System's 'mbgrid' tool, which utilizes a high-tension spline interpolation method to fill grid cells with no input elevation values. Preferential weighting was given to more recent, higher-accuracy datasets. 2010-09-01T00:00:00 The DEM was quantitatively evaluated by comparing with NGS geodetic monuments.
