Scientific Computing System |
The Scientific Computing System (SCS) provides; Navigation Data: Of any position or
orientation system. Meterological data: sensors that measure atmospheric properties.
Oceanographic data: Sensors that measure the physical and/or chemical properties of
the ocean. Sonar data: Single-beam and Doppler Speed. Winches data: three winches
output line out, line rate and line tension. Derived data: Sensors that are created
in SCS for the purpose of manipulating existing data (i.e.different units, calculating
other measurements like true wind). |

|
Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) |
A CTD device's primary function is to detect how the conductivity and temperature
of the water column changes relative to depth. Conductivity is a measure of how well
a solution conducts electricity and it is directly related to salinity. By measuring
the conductivity of seawater, the salinity can be derived from the temperature and
pressure of the same water. The depth is then derived from the pressure measurement
by calculating the density of water from the temperature and the salinity. |
1 |
|
Sound Velocity Profile |
The XBT (Expendable Bathythermograph) measures temperature through the water column.
XBT software calculates sound velocity, which is applied to the multibeam data for
accurate measure of bathymetry. |

|
Imagery |
Images taken by cameras mounted on the ROVs D2 and Seirios. This data gives the public
and scientists an exclusive look at the habitat and behavior of creatures along the
seafloor and throughout the water column. |

ROV Track, ROV Profiles, events noted along the track, ancilliary data and list of
biological and geological specimens observed and/or collected during the dive. |

|
Multibeam |
Images of the ocean floor provided by multibeam sonar are a key part of reconnaissance
in the Okeanos Explorer exploration strategy for finding anomalies in the deep ocean,
and also provide essential information for planning up?close investigations that use
the ship?s underwater robots. |
1 |
|
Split Beam |
The split-beam echosounders, collect data over a broad range of frequencies, allowing
us to distinguish between objects in the water column with more clarity and confidence. |
1 |
|
Sub-bottom Profiler |
The sub-bottom profiling system installed in the hull of Okeanos is a type of 'chirp'
instrument. Instead of emitting sound at a fixed frequency (rate at which a full sound
wave is transmitted), a chirp system sweeps through a wide-frequency band (three to
four kilohertz wide) that allows the outgoing signal to be more powerful and able
to resolve geologic layering/features at a higher resolution. |

|
Water Column Mapping |
Water column backscatter data collected during the mission is used to explore aspects
of the marine environment that are found between the ocean surface and the sea floor. |

Deep Discoverer ROV |
Deep Discoverer |
Deep Discoverer, or "D2", is a 6,000m rated ocean exploration remotely operated vehicle
(ROV). Operating from the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer (R337), D2 is part of an advanced
two-body tethered system. Its two high definition cameras and 16,600 lumens of hydraulically
positionable LED lights produce broadcast-quality high definition video streamed live
to internet connections around the world via telepresence. Navigational sensors, including
a fiber optic gyroscope and doppler velocity log, 40HP of electric propulsion, and
an integrated control system capable of precise auto-pilot flight and station-keeping,
allow pilots to image the most obscure objects of the subsea world. D2 transmits real-time
sensor measurements of conductivity, temperature, depth, pressure, and more through
its high speed fiber optic communications. Additionally, a hydraulic pump powers two
7-function manipulators and an extendable utility drawer. Three large syntactic foam
blocks give D2 the ability to install up to 400 lbs of additional equipment making
Deep Discoverer a very flexible platform for ocean exploration. |

NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer |
Okeanos Explorer (EX) |
NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer is the only federal vessel dedicated to exploring our largely
unknown ocean for the purpose of discovery and the advancement of knowledge about
the deep ocean. The ship is operated by the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps and civilians
as part of NOAA's fleet managed by NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations.
Mission equipment is operated by NOAA's Office of Ocean Exploration and Research in
partnership with the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration. |

SEIRIOS Camera Sled |
Seirios |
Seirios is a 6,000m rated camera platform designed for ocean exploration as part of
a two-body tethered system. As a stainless steel framed platform of cameras, lights,
and sensors, Seirios operates from the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer (R337) along with
the ROV Deep Discoverer. Attached to the ship by the electro-optical-mechanical 0.68
cable, Seirios carries an articulated HD camera and six 400W HMI lights for video
production and improved lighting for D2. Fore and aft lateral thrusters enable Seirios
to turn 360 degrees to maintain illumination in a desired direction. Seirios can also
move laterally, within the constraints of the its cable. With the ROV attached by
a 30m neutrally buoyant tether, one significant reason for utilizing Seirios in this
two-body configuration is to decouple Deep Discoverer from the ship's motion. A suite
of sensors provide real-time measurements of conductivity, temperature, depth, pressure,
and more transmitted through high speed fiber optic communications. |
