The Indonesia-U.S. Ocean Exploration Partnership (INDEX) Sangihe Talaud (SATAL) 2010 Ocean Exploration Expedition is a joint expedition between NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and the Indonesian Research Vessel Baruna Jaya IV, and is intended to symbolize a long-term commitment to partnership between NOAA and representative Indonesian scientific ministries and agencies. While Baruna Jaya IV conducted parallel operations in support of the INDEX-SATAL mission, this cruise metadata record discusses only the operations of NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.

    Purpose This cruise was the first of the series of the cruises that was conducted in cooperation between US and Indonesian government. INDEX-SATAL 2010 expedition (Indonesia Exploration'Sangihe Talaud Region) is aimed at exploration of an area approved by Indonesian government north of Sulewasi islands, Indonesia, referred to as INDEX-SATAL 2010 exploration area. INDEX-SATAL 2010 area extends from 2° N to 6° 24' and 124° 45' E to 128° E covering an area of ~ 31000 square miles.
