Occurrence of Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis) from SEAMAP and NMFS SEFSC Fishery-Independent Resource Surveys

browse graphicNOAA logo
Fisheries-independent catch and effort data from Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) Reef Fish Surveys (from 1995 to 2017) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Bottom Longline Surveys (from 2001 to 2018) are used to map the occurrence of gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The final summary is represented as a point layer. The layer attributes include the longitude (LON) and latitude (LAT) of each station, the presence or absence (OCCURRENCE) of the species and the survey (SURVEY) during which it was taken.
The surveys encounter primarily adult fish, but may represent some juvenile fish as well.

Source Datasets
  • Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission (GSMFC) SEAMAP Database
    • Description of Source: The Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) is a State/Federal/university program for collection, management and dissemination of fishery-independent data and information in the southeastern United States. Resource surveys began in the Gulf of Mexico in 1982. These surveys, which collect a variety of biological and environmental information, currently include Summer and Fall Groundfish Surveys; Winter, Spring, and Fall Plankton Surveys; a Reef Fish Survey; a Vertical Longline Survey; and an Inshore Bottom Longline Survey.
  • NMFS/SEFSC/MSLABS Bottom Longline Survey Data
    • Description of Source: The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC), Mississippi Laboratories (MSLABS), Resource Survey Division conducts fishery-independent resource surveys throughout the southeast region of the United States. The primary goal of these surveys is to monitor the abundance, distribution, and health of living marine resources and their habitats. The NMFS SEFSC Bottom Longline surveys typically covers the continental shelf from Brownsville, TX to the Dry Tortugas in depths ranging from 9 to 360 meters. The survey collects a variety of biological and environmental information. Data are available upon request.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
