1 Submersible Data (Dive Waypoints) for Islands in the Stream 2002 - Pharmaceutical Discovery, Vision, and Bioluminescence - Office of Ocean Exploration Data and information collected by the submersible Johnson Sea-Link II at waypoints along its track during one dive of the 2002 "Islands in the Stream - Pharmaceutical Discovery, Vision, and Bioluminescence" expedition sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration, August 15 - 31, 2002. Measurements and information include sub's position and depth; personnel assignments; dive, mission, target, and vehicle ID's; dive comments; hyperlinks to CTD plots; water temperature; and salinity. The Marine Operations Division of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution provided the original submersible data. Quality assurance included a comparsion and synchronization of dive log waypoint depths and CTD depths, review of minimum and maximum values, and deletion of bad values.

      1 Waypoint Data: 1. Start with "jsl2_3317_wpt.dbf" and add information such as CTD data files. Submersible CTD data: 1. Extracted appropriate columns from SeaBird CTD ASCII data file 2. Assumed that Scan #1 is one second after "Start Time" and that data is shown at 1 scan per second. 3. Used "fill" function in Microsoft Excel to generate time values. 4. CTD "readme" file states that due to a hardware failure, start time is wrong (not synchronized with any standard time). ****** Merging Waypoint and CTD data: 1. Compared Expedition Information System dive log information with CTD data (end of descent and beginning of ascent) to approximately reference the CTD time to the actual dive time. [Dive 3304: Dive Time - CTD Time = -12:06:20] 2. Manually copied records from submersible CTD data spreadsheet that corresponded in time with each waypoint. 3. Compared CTD depths and depths recorded for each waypoint as a confirmation that times were approximately synchronized.Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of dive waypoints was imported into ArcGIS as a table and converted into an ESRI shapefile. Resulting ESRI shapefile was loaded into ArcSDE as an SDE layer.
