Sound Pressure Spectral Density at 1 Hertz and 1 Hour Resolution Recorded at SanctSound Site SB02_05

This record represents the sound pressure spectral density (PSD) levels derived from raw passive acoustic data. The hourly PSD levels were calculated as the median of mean-square pressure amplitude (µPa^2) with a frequency resolution of 1 Hz from 10 Hz to 24,000 Hz over no less than 1800 seconds in each hour and converted to decibels (dB re 1 µPa^2/Hz). These data were recorded at SanctSound site SB02_05 between August 2, 2019 and October 5, 2019.

  • NOAA-Navy Sanctuary Soundscapes Monitoring Project (SanctSound)
    • Sound Monitoring
      NOAA and the U.S. Navy are working to better understand underwater sound within the National Marine Sanctuary System. For the next few years, these agencies will work with numerous scientific partners to study sound within seven national marine sanctuaries and one marine national monument, which includes waters off Hawai'i and the east and west coasts. Standardized acoustic measurements are used to assess sounds produced by marine animals, physical processes (e.g., wind and waves), and human activities. Collectively, this information will help NOAA and the Navy measure sound levels and baseline acoustic conditions in sanctuaries. This work is a continuation of ongoing Navy and NOAA monitoring and research, including efforts by the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.

Processing Steps
  • Sound pressure spectral density (PSD) levels in units of 1 µPa^2/Hz were calculated using Welch's Method in Matlab (FFT length = 48000 points, Hann window length = 48000, FFT overlap = 0%), resulting in PSD estimates of mean-square pressure amplitude (µPa^2) with a frequency resolution of 1 Hz and temporal resolution of 1 second. For every 1-Hertz (Hz) frequency band from 10 Hz to 24,000 Hz, PSD levels per hour were calculated as the median of mean-square pressure amplitude (µPa^2) over no less than 1800 seconds for that hour. PSD levels per hour for each frequency band were converted to decibels (dB re 1 µPa^2/Hz).
  • Data were processed with Triton - Soundscape Metrics Remora (Github commit '44f0f20'; Feb 9, 2020) and Matlab (2016b and newer; statistics toolbox).
