There were four major research components to HICEAS: visual observations for cetaceans, including photo-identification, biopsy sampling, and satellite tagging; passive acoustic monitoring using towed hydrophone arrays and other tools; ecosystem assessment, including visual surveys for seabirds and measurement of oceanographic variables (CTD casts, EK-60); and conduct other ancillary projects, such as aerial photogrammetry using a hexacopter, testing of new passive acoustic tools, and other projects that support and augment our assessment mission. purpose: The Hawaiian Islands Cetacean and Ecosystem Assessment Survey (HICEAS) was a large-scale ship survey for cetaceans and seabirds within the U.S. waters of the Hawaiian Islands. The goals of HICEAS are to estimate how many cetaceans are in Hawaiian waters, examine their population structure, and understand their habitat. status: (MD_ProgressCode) completed pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: Jeffrey Moore organisationName: NMFS Southwest Fisheries Science Center positionName: Wildlife Biologist contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 858-546-7161 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 8901 La Jolla Shores Drive city: La Jolla administrativeArea: CA postalCode: 92037-1509 country: USA electronicMailAddress: jeff.e.moore@noaa.gov role: (CI_RoleCode) principalInvestigator resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) notPlanned descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > Oceans > Ocean Acoustics > Acoustic Scattering keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > Oceans > Aquatic Sciences > Fisheries keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Bathymetry keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > BIOSPHERE > ECOSYSTEMS > AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > BIOSPHERE > ECOSYSTEMS > MARINE ECOSYSTEMS keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems > Benthic keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems > Pelagic keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Seafloor Topography type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Science Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2020-01-09 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) publication edition: 9.1 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Earth Science Data and Information System contactInfo: (CI_Contact) onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/learn/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords name: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords description: The information provided on this page seeks to define how the GCMD Keywords are structured, used and accessed. The ship has a low sound signature to reduce reactions of fish to the presence of the ship and provides for a low signal-to-noise ratio for acoustic sensors. This allows scientists to study fish populations and collect oceanographic data with fewer effects on fish and marine mammal behavior. The multi-frequency scientific sonars provide the ability to conduct acoustic surveys that can distinguish fish types, estimate biomass, determine fish school shapes, and provide data on sea floor topography. Reuben Lasker is also equipped with oceanographic sampling and measurement systems, instrumented trawls, longlines, and plankton nets for direct sampling. The ship has a dynamic positioning system to steer along a pre-determined trackline and to accurately hold the ship in a fixed position. The ship is also equipped with meteorological data collection systems and has extensive wet and dry labs to provide maximum utilization of every hour at sea. These technologies will dramatically improve the ability to conduct diverse data collection operations as required by its mission. The ship is named after Dr. Reuben Lasker (1929-1988), who served as the Director of SWFSC's Coastal Fisheries Division and as adjunct professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, U.C. San Diego. Dr. Lasker built a renowned research group that focused on the recruitment of young fish to the adult population - a topic with implications for fisheries management throughout the world. sponsor: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: DOC/NOAA/OMAO/MOC-P > Marine Operations Center - Pacific, NOAA Marine Operations, NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) facsimile: 206-553-2246 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: NOAA/OMAO/MOC-P deliveryPoint: 1801 Fairview Avenue East city: Seattle administrativeArea: WA postalCode: 98102-3767 country: USA electronicMailAddress: CO.MOC.Pacific@noaa.gov role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact sponsor: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: organisationName: DOC/NOAA/NMFS/SWFSC > Southwest Fisheries Science Center contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 858-546-7000 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 8901 La Jolla Shores Dr. city: La Jolla administrativeArea: CA postalCode: 92037 country: USA electronicMailAddress: role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact instrument: (MI_Instrument) citation: (CI_Citation) title: Simrad ME70 Echosounder date: (inapplicable) identifier: (MD_Identifier) code: ME70 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: Simrad - Kongsberg Maritime AS contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: +47 3303 4000 (Norway) facsimile: +47 3304 2987 (Norway) address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: P.O.
