Archive of Geosample Data and Information from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Geological Collections
The University of California San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography
(SIO) is a partner in the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS)
database, contributing information about SIO Geologcial Collections to the IMLGS to
help researchers discover marine geosamples curated by SIO. The SIO partner repository
also sends related data, documents, and imagery to NCEI for long-term archive, but
the originating institution is the definitive source of information related to their
sample collection. SIO Geological Collections are a physical library of priceless
geological samples that come from the seafloor and subseafloor of the world?s oceans.
The Scripps Core Collection contains nearly 7,000 cores. Dredged rocks in the collection
consist of more than 4,000 dredge hauls and related archive materials.

Supplemental Information |
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Collection includes rocks from a wide variety
of physiographic provinces throughout the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. All
major tectonic features, including hot spots, island chains, seamounts, and abyssal
plains are represented and rock types include drowned coral reef rocks, ice-rafted
rocks, and manganese nodules as well as very rare igneous, metamorphic, and mantle
rocks. Additonal related data and information are available directly from the contributing
institution, which is the authoritative and most current source of data and information
related to their sample collection. The IMLGS contains a subset of summary metadata
from the institutional database. Dr. William Riedel, former SIO Curator, participated
in design of the original IMLGS.
|
Purpose | The SIO Geological Collections support not only Scripps faculty and student research, but also that of scientists from other domestic and non-U. S. institutions, and are a growing archive of sea-floor samples and associated data supporting a diverse variety of scientific research. Collections materials also provide a viable resource for the education of graduate, undergraduate, and K-12 students. Related data and information are archived at NCEI to promote public access to research results and to increase their discoverability via the IMLGS. |

Lineage Statement | Data are received by NCEI on an intermittent basis from the repository. Incoming data are checked for adherence to controlled vocabularies, illegal data types in numeric fields, and out of range latitudes/longitudes. NCEI adds IGSNs/links to related resources, where known, and may perform cursory visual inspection of data for reasonableness, asking the originator for guidance on discrepancies. Preliminary processed data are placed in a test database for inspection by the originator, and iteratively corrected until the originator approves their publication to the production database. Data may also be updated/corrected at any time, at the originator's request. |
