Archive of Geosample Data and Information from the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories (AOML).
The U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Atlantic Oceanograpic and Meteorological
Laboratories (AOML) formerly operated a geosample repository which stored ocean floor cores and grabs collected during their marine geology research activities.
The repository housed 968 cores, grabs, and suspended sediment samples from multiple cruises of the ships Ferrel and Researcher collected from 1974 through 1981.
The AOML repository was decommissioned and samples previously curated by AOML are no longer available for study.
Prior to closing the repository, AOML coded and sent data and information related to their sample collection to NCEI (formerly NGDC) for long-term archive, and for
discoverability via the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS) database.

Supplemental Information |
When AOML was formed, marine geophysical and geological research was a major focus
of the laboratory, especially sedimentation and geotechnical properties of sediment.
During that time, AOML established a core repository. The repository was decommissioned
several years after AOML's mgg group was downsized and reorganized.
|
Purpose | The purpose of adding information about the AOML geological samples collection to the IMLGS was originally to promote new research on existing samples. Since closure of the repository, the information still serves to improve public access to NOAA research results by providing geospatial information about samples on which former AOML techincal publications and research were based. |

Lineage Statement | Data are no longer received by NCEI from this repository. Incoming data were checked for adherence to controlled vocabularies, illegal data types in numeric fields, and out of range latitudes/longitudes. NCEI added IGSNs/links to related resources, where known, and performed cursory visual inspection of data for reasonableness, asking the originator for guidance on discrepancies. |
