Niue 3 arc-second Coastal Digital Elevation Model

NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information is building high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for select U.S. coastal regions. These integrated bathymetric-topographic DEMs are used to support tsunami forecasting and warning efforts at the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The DEMs are part of the tsunami forecast system SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis) currently being developed by PMEL for the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers, and are used in the MOST (Method of Splitting Tsunami) model developed by PMEL to simulate tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation.

Processing Steps
  • 2016-04-01T00:00:00 -Datasets were visually inspected with ArcGIS, GlobalMapper and MB-System for identification and editing of data anomalies, including but not limited to inconsistencies between overlapping or adjacent datasets, 'noisy' data, etc.
  • 2016-04-01T00:00:00 -All data were converted to ASCII XYZ files. A 3 arc-second bathymetric 'pre-surface' grid of bathymetric data (near- and far-shore multibeam and trackline soundings) was generated using a tensioned spline algorithm within GMT's 'surface' utility that interpolated depth values to areas where data were sparse and/or nonexistent. The bathymetric 'pre-surface' was then imported into ArcGIS and clipped to the coastline of Niue to remove values over land. The clipped 'pre-surface' was then converted to ASCII XYZ point data.
  • 2016-04-01T00:00:00 -Seafloor contours (300, 600 and 900 meters) of Niue's fore-reef slope were digitized manually and converted to an ASCII XYZ file using ArcGIS.
  • 2016-04-01T00:00:00 -Topographic raster data were converted to an ASCII XYZ file using GDAL's raster utility.
  • 2016-04-01T00:00:00 -The final integrated 3 arc-second topo-bathy DEM was created using MB-System's 'mbgrid' tool, which utilizes a high-tension spline interpolation method to fill grid cells with no input elevation values. The bathymetric surface points, digitized contours, GEBCO08 grid and topographic data were used as source datasets in the spline gridding algorithm. Preferential weighting was given to more recent, higher-accuracy datasets.
  • 2016-04-01T00:00:00 -The DEM was qualitatively evaluated to identify any artifacts that may have been introduced during the gridding process. As necessary, the data were edited and the gridding routine was re-run. Once the DEM was deemed suitable, it was compared to nautical charts to ensure data consistency.
