abstract: Multibeam, single beam, and subbottom sonar data will be collected 24 hours a day. XBT casts will be conducted regularly for multibeam calibration. The ship's Scientific Computing System (SCS) will monitor and collect oceanographic, navigation, and meteorological data throughout the cruise.
purpose: EX1403 is an exploratory mapping expedition. Using deep water multibeam, single beam and sub-bottom profile data, EX will perform baseline characterization of highest priority areas based on feedback from other NOAA Offices, Programs, Labs and regional management councils. Top priority areas are focused on Marine Protected Areas in the South Atlantic off the east coast of the U.S. EX will also fill data gaps along the Atlantic continental slope. As a survey of opportunity, EX will test an advanced oxygen/argon sensor, to conduct shallow plankton tows to help assess if bluefin tuna are spawning over the Blake Plateau region, and to search for an underwater cultural heritage resource in the vicinity of the continental slope near Cape Hatteras.
credit: Credit for this cruise goes to the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research and its Okeanos Explorer Program.

description: The state of the art 30 kHz EM 302 deep water multibeam sonar is manufactured by Kongsberg, Inc of Norway. The EM 302 transducers are modular linear arrays in a Mills cross configuration with separate units for transmit and receive. This sonar offers significantly larger swath width, increased data density and resolution. Beam focusing is applied both during reception and transmission. The system has up to 288 beams / 432 soundings per swath with pointing angles automatically adjusted according to achievable coverage or operator defined limits. In multi-ping mode, 2 swaths are generated per ping cycle, with up to 864 soundings. With multi-ping the transmit fan is duplicated and transmitted with a small difference in along track tilt. The applied tilt takes into account depth, coverage and vessel speed to give a constant sounding separation along track. The beam spacing can be adjusted as equi-distant or equi-angular. EM 302 uses both CW pulses and FM sweep pulses with pulse compression on reception, in order to increase the maximum useful swath width. The transmit fan is split in several individual sectors with independent active steering according to accomplish compensation for the vessel movements: yaw, pitch and roll. The high density, high resolution, large coverage and water column capability makes EM 302 an ideal system to explore the sea bed and the water column for detection and characterization of a broad spectrum of features.

description: For over twenty years, Teledyne RD Instruments has been the preeminent supplier of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling (ADCP) instrumentation for open ocean applications. Teledyne RDIƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¢ƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¿s vessel-mounted Ocean Surveyor family of ADCPs continues to raise the bar, collecting detailed maps of the distribution of water currents and suspended materials through the water column and along the shipƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¢ƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¿ƒ¿‚¿s path - at depths and resolutions previously considered unattainable. In real time, the ADCP is also used to aid in situ decision-making, to adapt field operations, and to understand current regime characteristics.
