Octave Band Sound Pressure Levels at 1 Hour Resolution Recorded at SanctSound Site PM01_02

This record represents the octave band sound pressure levels (OLs) derived from raw passive acoustic data. OLs were calculated by integration of sound pressure spectral density estimates of the mean-square pressure with a 1 Hz/1 second resolution over 10 octave bands with the center frequencies ranging from 31.5 to 16,000 Hz. The result is then calculated per hour as a median over no less than 1,782 seconds for that hour and converted to decibels (dB re 1 µPa). These data were recorded at SanctSound Site PM01_02 between October 01, 2020 and July 09, 2021.

  • NOAA-Navy Sanctuary Soundscapes Monitoring Project (SanctSound)
    • Sound Monitoring
      NOAA and the U.S. Navy are working to better understand underwater sound within the U.S. National Marine Sanctuary System. From 2018 to 2021, these agencies will work with numerous scientific partners to study sound within seven national marine sanctuaries and one marine national monument, which includes waters off Hawai'i and the east and west coasts. Standardized measurements will assess sounds produced by marine animals, physical processes (e.g., wind and waves), and human activities. Collectively, this information will help NOAA and the Navy measure sound levels and baseline acoustic conditions in sanctuaries. This work is a continuation of ongoing Navy and NOAA research, including efforts by NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries This dataset represents the derived products from the raw acoustic data that are archived at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information.

Processing Steps
  • Octave band sound pressure levels (OLs) in units of µPa^2 were calculated by integration of PSD estimates of the mean-square pressure (µPa^2) with a 1 Hz/1 second resolution over each of 10 octave bands (ISO266-1997) with the center frequencies ranging from 31.5 to 16000 Hz. The resulting OLs with 1 second resolution were then used to calculate hourly OLs as a median over no less than 1,782 1-second values for that hour. The OLs per hour were converted to decibels (dB re 1 µPa).
  • Data were processed with Triton - Soundscape Metrics Remora (Github commit '44f0f20'; Feb 9, 2020) and Matlab (2016b and newer; statistics toolbox).
