EK60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During NYWEA-NF17-09

Seafloor Characterization and Hydrographic Mapping of the New York Bight to Support Coastal and Ocean Planning (NF1709, EK60). Scientists will collect high resolution multibeam and acoustic fisheries data in mid-water\ndepths approximately 10 to 60 meters so as to continue to characterize seafloor habitats\nwithin New York Call Area. The objective of this project is to collect a multibeam\nbathymetry dataset with 100% seafloor ensonification, along with multibeam backscatter\nsuitable for seafloor characterization. Fishery acoustics data will be collected to\ncharacterize broad-scale fish abundance, biomass, and utilization patterns, as well as to\nlocate and document fish spawning aggregations. Multibeam data will be collected to\nconform to IHO Order 1 (less than 100m) and Order 2 (>100m) accuracy standards. The strategies\ndeveloped for each survey area will take into account the minimum depths, general\nbathymetry, and time allotment.

  • Simrad EK80 raw (.raw) format (Version:1)
    • File Specification: Kongsberg/Simrad .raw files are generated by ME70, EK60 or ES60 instruments. They contain power and optionally angular position data with each beam/frequency identified by an independent channel. See the Simrad interface specification manual for further information. The .wcd files are generated by Kongsberg EM302 or EM122 instruments. See Kongsberg documentation for more information.

    Purpose The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), Marine Spatial Ecology\nDivision will be conducting a scientific research mission onboard NOAA Ship Nancy\nFoster funded by Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management (BOEM). The purpose of\nthe cruise will be to collect swath bathymetry and fishery acoustics in coastal water of\nNew York to assist BOEM in characterizing geophysical and ecological conditions of the\nNew York Call Area, renewable energy site.
