Count Component Title Abstract
1 AFSC/RACE/GAP/McConnaughey: South Arctic Reconnaissance-2012-FFCPT The Free Fall Cone Penetrometer Test (FFCPT) is a technique for geotechnical profiling of sub aqueous sediments. It was developed based on proven piezocone penetration test (CPT) theory and algorithms, with modifications to the manner of deployment and recovery. The instrument is designed to free fall through the water column, eventually impacting the seabed, recording penetration data at a high sample rate (2,000 Hz). This permits high resolution characterization of the sediment layering and material properties such as grain size and undrained shear strength. In addition to seabed characterization, the instrument can also be used for underway sound velocity profiling.

1 2012-09-01T00:00:00 The FFCPT was deployed from the NOAA Ship FAIRWEATHER with aid of a line pulling sheave to help the device approach terminal velocity as it falls through the water column. Instrument on-bottom times were called to the Sonar Lab from the fantail and a position was marked within QINSy navigation software. These positions were then extracted from the QINSy database and entered into a spreadsheet format and then imported into ArcGIS as a vector point feature dataset.
