Baseline Data Collection Experimental Monitoring Program (MESC-COE Gaillard Island 1977-1982): Hydrography, Sediments, and Benthic Fauna (NCEI Accession 0117688)
Data from a set of studies that ran from 1977-1978, and 1980-1982, around the site
of Gaillard Island, Mobile Bay, Alabama, before, during, and after its construction
(1979-1981). Extant data from the MESC Data Management System include sediment particle
size distribution (001), identification and enumeration of benthic fauna (002), discrete
hydrography and turbidity (003) during and after island construction, and discrete
hydrography and turbidity before island construction (004).

Purpose | Gaillard Island is an artificial island in Mobile Bay, Alabama, at the intersection between the Theodore ship channel and the Mobile Bay ship channel. It was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1979-1981 while dredging the Theodore ship channel. Field data were collected from 50 sampling stations in 7 categories of station types around the construction site before, during, and after construction of the island (1977-1982) to describe the area's sedimentology, benthic biology, and hydrography, and to ascertain the environmental impact of the construction. |
