The 30-foot Karen J is a heavily built aluminum catamaran and DGPS-equipped automated
hydrographic survey vessel with an environment-controlled cabin capable of transporting up to
six passengers. The vessel features push knees, extra-large fuel tanks, twin 225 hp four-stroke
outboards providing a combined 450 horsepower, and a 3,000W generator. Designed to operate
effectively in open waters under typical conditions, the Karen J utilizes a landing craft design
that allows for easy loading and unloading of equipment and personnel, supporting a broader
range of geophysical investigation technologies such as sampling and coring. The large work
deck is equipped with a 1,000-pound davit for technology deployment and retrieval. The vessel
has a cruising speed of 25 knots, a maximum speed of 35 knots, a fuel capacity of 175 gallons,
and is transported on an aluminum triple-axle trailer.
