The Phantom S2 is a 732m (2,400ft) rated ocean exploration remotely operated vehicle (ROV), and has been part of NOAA's fleet for many years. The ROV is tethered to the ship and can conduct independent scientific investigation or be used to accompany a manned submersible. The vehicle's depth, heading, and geographic position are also recorded and relayed through the cabling. The S2 Phantom has four thrusters that provide agile horizontal, lateral, and vertical movement. It's controlled by an ROV operator from a system on board the ship using a joystick, a camera control, and a video monitor.
