The Sikuliaq, one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world, is able to break ice up to 2.5 feet thick. Constructed at Marinette Marine Corporation, a shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, the Sikuliaq is home ported in Alaska, at UAF's Seward Marine Center in Seward Alaska. The vessel is owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, as part of the U.S. academic research fleet. It is used by scientists in the U.S. and international oceanographic community through the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System. </gco:CharacterString> </gmi:description> <gmi:sponsor xlink:title="U.S. National Science Foundation (owner)" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/b219d240-e930-4689-b9dd-4fc645121718"/> <gmi:sponsor xlink:title="University of Alaska Fairbanks (operator)" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/34efcea1-4678-411e-8796-c89dfaa50f3b"/> <gmi:instrument xlink:title="Kongsberg EM710" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/20729752-cee0-49a6-abc4-319bd73a3429"/> <gmi:instrument xlink:title="Kongsberg EM302 Multibeam Echosounder" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/794feae0-679a-11e0-ae3e-0800200c9a66"/> </gmi:MI_Platform>
