The ROV has been retrofitted with custom equipment to withstand freezing temperatures and resist ice restrictions. It is tethered to the ship and can conduct independent scientific investigation or it can be used to accompany a manned submersible. Unlike other ROVs, the Global Explorer uses glass fiber in the cables, transmitting data and information by light rather than copper wires. It's controlled by an ROV operator from a system on board the ship using a joystick, a camera control, and a video monitor. </gco:CharacterString> </gmi:description> <gmi:sponsor xlink:href="https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/08D95C427FB128479945893256DADE37" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:title="NOAA/OAR/OER - Ocean Exploration and Research (POC)"/> <gmi:instrument gco:nilReason="unknown" xmlns:gco="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gco"/> </gmi:MI_Platform>
