description:   The Bathymetric Swath Survey System (BSSS) was created by General Instrument Corp. and built using the Hydrochart multibeam system. BSSS is designed for use in waters of up to 650 meters in depth, with a swath width of up to 2.5 times the water depth. BSSS operates at 36 kHz and uses 21 individual beams to cover the seafloor. The second generation BSSS, called the Hydrochart II, replaced the BSSS in the late 1980's.
