Long-term data from these events can be used to establish the past record of natural hazard event occurrences, which is important for planning, response, and mitigation of future events. NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) plays a major role in post-event data collection. The data in this archive is gathered from scientific and scholarly sources, regional and worldwide catalogs, tide gauge reports, individual event reports, and unpublished works. For more information, please see: http://ngdc.noaa.gov/hazard/hazards.shtml. To view this service in an interactive mapping application, please see the Global Natural Hazards Data Viewer: http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hazards/ (NOAA GeoPlatform entry: http://noaa.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=1b71abe428f446e992a3e01363729f99). Data included in the map service: Tsunami Source Events: information about the sources of tsunami events. Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. Layer 0: all tsunami events as green squares. Layer 1: uses symbols for cause of tsunami, number of deaths, and earthquake magnitude (legend: http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hazards/images/tsevent_legend.png). Tsunami Observations: information about locations where tsunami effects were observed. Layer 2: all tide gauge/deep ocean gauge observations, symbolized as vertical bars for water height. Layer 3: all eyewitness/post-tsunami survey observations, symbolized as vertical bars for water height (legend: http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hazards/images/tsobservation_legend1.png). Layer 4: all tsunami observations, symbolized as crosses, color-coded by observation type (legend: http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hazards/images/tsobservation_legend2.png). Significant Earthquakes (Layer 5): information about destructive earthquakes that meet at least one of the following criteria: moderate damage (approximately $1 million or more), 10 or more deaths, magnitude 7.5 or greater, Modified Mercalli Intensity X or greater, or the earthquake generated a tsunami (legend: http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hazards/images/signifeq_legend.png). Volcanoes and Significant Volcanic Eruptions: information about eruptions that meet at least one of the following criteria: caused fatalities, caused moderate damage (approximately $1 million or more), caused a tsunami, Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 6 or larger, or the eruption was associated with a major earthquake. Layer 6: significant volcanic eruptions, symolized by number of deaths (legend: http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hazards/images/volevent_legend.png). Layer 7: volcano locations (from Smithsonian Institution). DART Stations (Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis): Layer 8: Current DART deployments. Layer 9: Retrospective BPR (bottom-pressure recorder) deployments. Includes previous DART locations. National Ocean Service (NOS) Tsunami Tide Gauges (Layer 10): http://ngdc.noaa.gov/hazard/tide.shtml. Plate Boundaries: from University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) (Layer 11): http://www.ig.utexas.edu/research/projects/plates/data.htm. pointOfContact: xlink: https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/59a20100-186a-4a92-8b22-a395c1f515d1 title: NCEI GIS Team descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: DATA ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION > GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS > WEB-BASED GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS keyword: DATA MANAGEMENT/DATA HANDLING > DATA SEARCH AND RETRIEVAL keyword: DATA ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION > VISUALIZATION/IMAGE PROCESSING type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: xlink: https://data.noaa.gov/docucomp/component/9f0de6e7-428b-11df-9879-0800200c9a66 title: NASA/Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Earth Science Services Keywords serviceType: LocalName: ArcGIS Map Service serviceTypeVersion: 10.7 extent: (EX_Extent) geographicElement: (EX_GeographicBoundingBox) extentTypeCode: 1 westBoundLongitude: -180 eastBoundLongitude: 180 southBoundLatitude: -90 northBoundLatitude: 90 couplingType: (SV_CouplingType) tight containsOperations: (SV_OperationMetadata) operationName: ArcGIS for Server REST endpoint for dynamic map service DCP: unknown connectPoint: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://gis.ngdc.noaa.gov/arcgis/rest/services/web_mercator/hazards/MapServer protocol: http applicationProfile: http://www.geoplatform.gov/spec/esri-map-rest name: Natural Hazards ArcGIS Dynamic Map Service description: REST endpoint for Natural Hazards dynamic map service function: (CI_OnLineFunctionCode) search containsOperations: (SV_OperationMetadata) operationName: WMS Get Capabilities DCP: connectPoint: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://gis.ngdc.noaa.gov/arcgis/services/web_mercator/hazards/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS protocol: http applicationProfile: http://opengis.net/spec/wms name: Natural Hazards Data Web Map Service (WMS) description: Capabilities document for Open Geospatial Consortium Web Map Service for Hazards Data function: (CI_OnLineFunctionCode) search |
